Starring Vijay in the lead role, AR Murugadoss directorial Sarkar is a political drama and it is also the biggest film down south in quite a while. It released on 3000 screens worldwide. Right from the moment, it was announced, Sarkar has captured the imagination of the moviegoers. The promotional material also received considerable attention and by the time it released, the movie already had an audience.

A source close to the director had said to indianexpress.com that Sarkar beat Baahubali: The Conclusion’s day 1 collection, “Sarkar surpassed the day one collection of Baahubali 2 in the state. And we’re expecting Sarkar to be the highest Tamil grosser.” This is the third time Vijay and Murugadoss are working together.

Sarkar opened with Rs 30 crore. Overseas, too, it had fabulous openings, especially in the United Kingdom, France and Australia.

Sarkar has received mixed reviews. The Indian Express film critic S Subhakeerthana said in her review, “Sarkar belongs to Vijay, but not AR Murugadoss. It’s tailor-made for ‘Thalapathy’ who speaks of farmer suicides, Jallikattu, Tuticorin protests, the fishermen’s issue, ‘marketing and branding’ and how with the support of youngsters, he can save Tamil Nadu. Watch out for the scene where he talks about tomatoes and ketchup, please.”
