UPCOMING BIOPICS – From Real to Reel

Biopics based on the real-life stories of eminent personalities have usually been well-received by the audience and have done well at the box office too like MS Dhoni: The Untold Story, Nitish Tiwari’s ‘Dangal’, which was not only was a super hit in India. Actors and filmmakers are always on the lookout for more such films to prove their mettle.Check out the list of the most anticipated and hyped biopics that fans can look forward to in 2018 as Padman and Padmavati are already released.

GOLD

Khiladi Kumar is on a roll. From a patriotic to a ‘Padman’, Akki is donning various hats for his films. And now, he will essay the role of hockey player Balbir Singh, who was a part of the hockey team that won India’s first gold medal as an independent nation at the Olympic Games. Titled ‘Gold’, the film will see Akshay in a yet another new avatar. And this has definitely left his fans excited.

MOGUL

Based on the life of ‘T-Series’ founder Gulshan Kumar, who changed the face of Indian music industry beginning in the 1980s, this film will see Khiladi Akshay Kumar playing the lead role. It will trace Gulshan’s rags-to-riches story till the time he was shot dead outside a temple in Mumbai in 1997. It will be directed by Subhash Kapoor who also directed Akshay starrer ‘Jolly LLB 2’ and release in 2018.

MAHANATI

Mahanati / Nadigaiyar Thilagam is an upcoming trilingual Indian epic biographical drama film written directed by Nag Ashwin who had previously made Yevade Subramanyam, based on the life of South Indian actress Savitri. Starring Dulquer Salmaan, Keerthi Suresh, Samantha Akkineni and Vijay Devarakonda in the lead roles, the film began production during May 2017 and is set to release on 16 March 2018.

MANIKARNIKA

Controversial queen Kangana Ranaut’s ‘Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi’ will see her bringing Jhansi Ki Rani, alive on the silver screen. The story has written by K.V. Vijayendra Prasad. The film will release on April 27, 2018.The date likely to be changed due to Rajnikanth’s Kaala.

SOORMA

The Punjabi pop-sensation Diljit Dosanjh is all set to a present a different side of him to the world, which no one has ever seen before. Diljit is all geared up to play hockey legend and one of India’s greatest drag-flickers, Sandeep Singh, in an upcoming movie titled ‘Soorma’. Helmed by Shaad Ali, the biopic will also feature Taapsee Pannu in the lead role. The flick is slated to hit the theatres on June 29, 2018. Sandeep Singh is an ace hockey player and an ex-captain of the Indian National Team. In 2006, Singh was seriously injured after being hit by an accidental gunshot in a train, while on his way to join the national team, set to leave for the World Cup in Germany two days later. He was almost paralyzed and was in the wheelchair for two years. Singh not only recovered from that serious injury but also established himself again in the team.

DUTT BIOPIC

Based on ‘Munnabhai MBBS’ actor Sanjay Dutt’s life, the film features Ranbir Kapoor as the lead. As soon as the pictures of Ranbir bearing an uncanny resemblance to Sanjay surfaced online, fans have been going crazy waiting to watch the film. Ranbir is reportedly going all out with this one, putting on weight and even copying the famous walk of Sanjay to get into the skin of the character. Meanwhile, the title of the film is not revealed yet. The film will release on June 9. 2018.

SAINA NEHWAL BIOPIC

Directed by Amol Gupte, the movie will star Shraddha Kapoor as Padma Bhushan awardee badminton player Saina Nehwal, who won a bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics. Slated for a 2018 release, Shraddha has said that it is going to be her “most difficult film” to date.

SUPER 30

This untitled film stars actor Hrithik Roshan as mathematician Anand Kumar, the founder of the initiative Super 30, who selects 30 talented candidates each year from economically backward sections of society and trains them for the IIT-JEE entrance exam. The film is yet to go on the floors. The film will focus on Anand’s life and what struggles he faced to start the ‘Super 30’ coaching programme.

ABHINAV BINDRA

Harshvardhan Kapoor, son of Anil Kapoor who debuted with Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s ‘Mirzya’ has signed his third movie. In the movie, Harshwardhan will play Olympic Gold medalist Abhinav Bindra. Bindra is the first and only Indian to have held both the World and Olympic titles at the same time, a feat he accomplished by capturing the Gold Medal at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, after having won the gold at the 2006 ISSF World Shooting Championships.

MARIYAPPAN

The Filmmaker Aishwarya Dhanush Rajinikanth’s film will throw the spotlight on the life of the 21-year-old high jumper from Salem district in Tamil Nadu.In 2016 Summer Paralympic games held in Rio de Janeiro, Mariyappan won the gold for India in the high jump in the T-42 category.Thangavelu made a winning leap of 1.89 meters at the games, putting his Periyavadagampatti village in Salem district in Tamil Nadu on the global map.He had lost one of his legs at the age of five while playing outside his house when a state-owned bus crushed it.

CAPTAIN

Jayasurya never ceases to take us by surprise, with the kind of roles he picks up. The actor is taking up yet another challenge ‘ playing football legend V P Sathyan in his next movie. Titled as ‘Captain’, the film is being directed by Prajesh Sen, a journalist by profession and also has work experience with noted Director Siddique Lal.The film will be the first in Malayalam to portray the life of a sports star from the State.

While fiction is the usual agenda when it comes to films, the history also bears an impressive well of good stories. Making the optimum use of it, the industry has seen a rising trend in the biopic department, hopes these biopics will do well in the cinematic world.
